Master Scrima leading class

At the Chinese Martial Arts Center in Clearwater, Florida, we offer traditional instruction in Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan, Qi Gong, self-defense and other forms of Chinese martial arts.

Our martial arts school is centrally located in the Northwood Oaks Shopping Center at the intersection of McMullen Booth and Enterprise Roads. We serve the communities of Countryside, Safety Harbor, Clearwater, Palm Harbor, Oldsmar, East Lake, Dunedin, and Trinity. Some of our students even come from as far as Tampa and St. Petersburg to train at the Chinese Martial Arts Center.

Our students don’t choose our martial arts school for convenience. Rather, they choose our school for our long-standing tenure (we have been established for more than 43 years), and the quality of our instruction. Training at our school is self-empowering, challenging, and self-fulfilling, and we offer both Group Classes and Private Lessons.

Learn Kung Fu

With a history that spans more than 3000 years, Chinese martial arts emerged first as rudimentary techniques for survival and later developed into highly efficient skills. Known in the West as Kung Fu or Gong Fu, these arts evolved into many different styles. Other names used early in its history were Chuan Fa or Quan Fa, Chinese Karate, and Chinese Kenpo. Nowadays, the term Wushu is popular.

In our Wushu Guan, the martial arts hall, we teach traditional Northern Long Fist, which is often categorized as part of Shaolin Kung Fu. Our primary styles are Mizong Luohan (Labyrinth High Priest or Lost Track High Priest), and Ying Zhao Fan Zi, commonly known as Eagle Claw Kung Fu.

Benefits of Kung Fu

Regular practice in Kung Fu

  • promotes physical fitness
  • develops self-confidence
  • nurtures self-esteem
  • sharpens reflexes
  • teaches practical self-defense skills

What is the difference between Kung Fu and other martial arts styles?

Kung Fu, or Gong Fu, differs from Karate and Tae Kwon Do in principle and technique. Karate comes from Okinawa and Japan. Tae Kwon Do is from Korea. Kung Fu originated in China and its roots span more than 3000 years. Kung Fu is more fluid and makes more use of circular techniques. Power is generated in much the same way as a towel that is being snapped. A towel is loose and soft, yet if it is snapped quickly like a whip, it becomes powerful and rigid at the point of impact.

What are some of the characteristics of Kung Fu training?

The Kung Fu system taught at our school derives from the Northern School and is classified as Chang Quan or Long Fist. This method emphasizes quick agile movements, long-range techniques, and a variety of kicking techniques. It stresses soft circular blocking followed by fast powerful counters. Its techniques increase flexibility, improve balance, build endurance, and develop cat-like reflexes.

What is required of me in order to start taking lessons?

Beginners are always welcome, and our trial program makes it easy for new students of all fitness levels to get started. Beginner classes are geared toward introducing basic techniques. Students can progress at their own pace to gradually build a martial arts foundation and improve their physical conditioning.

What if I am not in very good shape?

Typically, most people who join my school are looking for a way to improve themselves. As a new student, you will be in a beginner class where training is progressive and paced so that you gradually build up your strength, stamina, and flexibility to prepare you for more advanced training. If you wait until you get into good shape, you might never get started. Let us help you in this process.

How much does it cost to take lessons?

The cost is determined by the type of program, and the number of family members on the program. We offer a 30-Day Free Trial Program (2 Classes per week) to give our school a try.

Learn Tai Chi

Among the many martial arts styles to come out of China is Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Taiji Quan. This is a great treasure, highly regarded for its therapeutic benefits. Tai Chi can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, gender, or physical condition. The slow, rhythmical movements, coupled with deep breathing, are the distinctive features of its practice.

At our martial arts school we teach Yang Style Taiji Quan as well as Wu Style Taiji Quan. Yang Style is the most widely practice system around the world. We also teach many of the Compulsory Taiji Quan Forms developed in more recent times.

Benefits of Tai Chi

The practice of Tai Chi

  • increases cardiovascular fitness
  • restores vitality
  • improves mental clarity
  • teaches relaxation
  • enhances balance
  • promotes restful sleep

What is the difference between Tai Chi and other forms of martial arts?

Unlike other forms of martial arts, Tai Chi Quan, also written as Tai Chi Chuan or Taiji Quan, can be practiced by anyone regardless of age or physical condition. This is because Tai Chi requires little effort to perform. Slow, even, rhythmical movements coupled with proper breathing are the distinguishing features of its practice.

Is Tai Chi an effective martial arts system?

Tai Chi is one of the world’s most renowned martial arts systems. It relies on the principles of yielding and redirecting the opponent’s force, and on softness overcoming hardness. These principles are harnessed through specialized training. Both solo and partner practice are required to develop the martial aspect of Tai Chi.

What are the health benefits of Tai Chi?

Nowadays many people are interested in the proven health benefits derived from Tai Chi. Scientific evidence suggests that there are three major therapeutic principles behind this effectiveness. These are:

  • The restoration of vitality through the development of Qi or Chi
  • The storage of physical energy through efficiency of movement
  • The massaging action of the internal organs through deep abdominal breathing

This place is the real deal. I have been in the Tampa Bay area for 9 years and have trained with MANY teachers, including lineage holders, grand masters and a host of others (sometimes even traveling more than an hour each way to attend classes). None of them come anywhere close to the knowledge, dedication, and authenticity of Master Scrima. I studied in Taiwan and China and have been looking for a teacher like this since I moved to America. This is the guy. You will not find a better person to learn from, guaranteed. His curriculum encompasses all aspects of true Tai Chi Chuen. He understands the art in all its myriad and complex levels. I find him to be an agreeable and down to earth person.

I began training in Kung-fu in 1976. While my training has waxed & waned over these many years, my devotion has never changed. After becoming a snowbird some 8 years ago, I was extreme fortunate to find Master Scrima's school. Having moved from Chinese Kenpo to TaiJi Chu'an about 15 years ago I needed somewhere to continue my journey while in St Pete. While it is a 45 minute drive for me, I could not think of a more highly knowledgeable instructor from which to continue my studies.Look no further if you are seeking the best Chinese based martial artist AND are willing to put forth the time and effort.

I have been a student of Master Scrima’s for six years. I’m eternally grateful to Master Scrima, who changed my life. While living in Baltimore, I practiced tai chi. I loved it. I moved to Florida and wanted to continue my Tai Chi journey; lucky for me, I found the Chinese Martial Arts Center. Master Scrima is the real deal and a great teacher. I learned to stand, walk, breathe naturally, move my body most efficiently, and defend myself. Master Scrima explains the how and why of every movement and history of martial arts - a complete education. I learn something every day about myself, even in my daily practice.A student of life,Cathy Greenawalt

Kung Fu (the English translation would be “skillful endeavor over time”) is on full display at the Chinese Martial Arts Center in Clearwater, Florida. I started training under Master Nick Scrima when I was 17 years old back in 2002 and after years of hard work I earned my Black Belt. This was just the beginning of my journey. Kung Fu training has been one of the most impactful and fulfilling experiences of my life. There is a reason that students continue to follow Master Scrima even after 20 years, me included. If you put in the work, the rewards are boundless.

My personal Martial Arts journey did not begin until my thirties, but I always had a lifelong interest in Chinese Martial Arts. Although I wasn’t actively searching for training, I was certain that I would recognize the opportunity when it presented itself. Everything clicked for me in 1998 when I entered the Chinese Martial Arts Center. The encyclopedia of traditional techniques, diverse styles, and deep training curricula were signs that I had arrived. My training path began through various dynamic Kung Fu styles (Mizong Luohan and Eagle Claw Kung Fu) and later evolved into less rigorous, internal styles such as Yang Style Taijiquan. Master Nick Scrima has dedicated the bulk of his life to the pursuit of martial excellence through traditional Chinese Martial Arts. His multi-faceted, hands-on approach to instruction is uniquely generous because of his sincerity about the functional meaning and basis of the arts. CMAC students of all ages are blessed with a rare chance to train locally with a knowledgeable Master. As well, other Chinese Martial Arts Masters (many of whom are Master Scrima’s teachers) are periodically hosted at the school to bring affordable, world-class workshops that share their deep understanding of their styles. What makes training at the Chinese Martial Arts Center challenging is that the mental and physical aspects must be connected within. Dedication is required. There will be sweat. As a venue for building skilled, full-body fitness and longevity, one will quickly learn more about oneself through the purposeful, functional movements of traditional Chinese Martial Arts than could ever be learned through slinging weights at a gym.

The Chinese Martial Arts Center is not just another school. It is one of a kind as is Master Instructor Nick Scrima. My journey to the school started years ago as I searched for a real traditional teacher that had the depth of knowledge and skill necessary to pass on the true essence of the systems he taught. He has verifiable lineage to the sources for the systems that he teaches. There are very few teachers with the type of credentials he has. This is what drew me to this school over 24 years ago. It's not often that as an adult you maintain a relationship with a teacher for this length of time unless there is something special about him. I felt from my first day at the school that this was were I belonged. In all of the years I have spent at the school, I do not think there has been one day that I have attended class that I have not been surprised by the depth of the knowledge and skill of Master Scrima. My experiences at the school over the years have allowed me to learn more about myself and continuously discover new facets of the systems that are taught. If you are looking for a school to satisfy a new years resolution or as a place to "work out", this may not be the place for you. If you are serious about learning authentic Chinese Martial arts that can be traced through Master Scrima's lineage to the sources, then this is the place for you. I think the website is a great place to start if you want to research the school and the teacher. Stopping at the school to see for yourself is the next step. The Tampa Bay area is lucky to have this school.

My son and I started our journey with Master Scrima over a year ago. There have been noticeable improvements in our strength and flexibility from the training and forms that Master Scrima has taught us. I have also begun learning Qi Gong and Tai Chi lessons to increase my internal strength, which has improved my overall well-being and will continue to enhance my physical recovery. We look forward to many years of learning from a Master with a legacy that offers a lifetime of growth and improvement, which I believe only Master Scrima can provide.

I started with Tai Chi and Qi Gong for three months and added in Kung Fu after. Within my first six months I gained strength, flexibility, endurance, a much better posture, and self-confidence. My long-standing lower back pain slowly improved and has now disappeared. After training for a while, I was surprised to discover that most of the students have been with this school for over 20 years. This boosted my confidence in knowing I selected the right school to train and grow with. Master Nick Scrima focuses on all aspects of learning which are part of a traditional Kung Fu School. Training incorporates forms, applications, self-defense, philosophy, history, and Chinese Culture to enrich the experience. I look forward to each and every class.Jeremy Detwiler
I believe this is best place in Clearwater and Tampa if you want your kid to learn not only karate but added benefits of self confidence and discipline. My son recently started this school but I really like the master, the way he is so humble and teach young kids. The master is no doubt the best known person to teach karate. I'm so thankful to front desk and all staff for being kind and helpful. Thank you so much.
